Beginning at the pier, you’ll be welcomed with stories of the island’s past before setting off to explore Baile Thiar, the island village. The tour stops at the old schoolhouse on Inishkea South, built in 1886 – a single-room school that once taught children from Inishkea South, Inishkea North, and the nearby Duvillaun Islands. Here, you’ll learn about the teachers, their students and challenges they faced in this remote Atlantic setting.
Both Inishkea South and Inishkea North had a king, or ‘rí’ in Irish until the islanders relocated to the mainland. The tour visits the house of the last rí of Inishkea and shares stories and his duties as a king. The legend of the Naomhóg, a favourite among visitors will also be recounted at this point.
